                                    FOUNDATIONS OF




                                            DEMOCRACY










                                 anadians get to choose their government representatives.
                                 Elections are held to select Canada’s members of Parliament.

                          CVoting is a right. It is also an important responsibility.

                              Canada is run by a system of laws. These are written rules
                          that guide everyone. In Canada no one is above the law. Police,

                          government leaders, and even the prime minister must follow

                          the rules. This is called the Rule of Law.

                              Different levels of government make laws. Canada’s

                          government is made up of three levels. There is the federal
                          level, the provincial level, and the municipal level. Parliament

                          makes up the federal government. Laws made at the federal

                          level affect the entire country. This includes laws about banks,
                          crime, and the post office. The right to vote at age 18 is also






                            Highways, such as Highway 1 in British Columbia, fall under the
                            provincial level of government.
