his experiences.
said it was as if he had “disappeared on some kind of
underground railroad.”
To keep the Underground Railroad secret from
the public and slaveholders, the organizers created
a code using railway terms. If people overheard their
conversations, they would think members were talking
about the railroad and not freedom seekers.
