Information about the Underground Railroad was often shared by
word of mouth.

Routes to safety were called lines.
Since many enslaved people were not able to learn
how to read and write, they had to find other ways to talk
to one another about the railroad. One of the ways they
did this was through songs called spirituals. The songs
used references to people and places in stories from the
Bible as codes to give instructions on how to escape or
where to meet.
