Many immigrants settled in Winnipeg.
Some lived in the city’s north end
while others lived in south Winnipeg.
They worked hard and did well
in their new home. Their children
spoke English perfectly, with
only the slightest accent.
Icelandic-Canadians called
themselves “IslendiNgur.”
But some bigoted and
envious Winnipeggers
corrupted this into the
insulting term, “goolies.”
goolies!
The Icelanders’ dirty goolies!
neighbourhood was
called “Goolie Town”
while Sargent Avenue
(the area’s main street)
became “Goolie Crescent.”
The Icelanders wanted to play hockey, as many Canadians did,
but the resentment of the other Winnipeggers was very strong.
They refused to let the Icelanders join any of their hockey teams.
