Undeterred, the Icelanders formed their own two teams in
1897 and an intense rivalry quickly formed between them.
The Icelandic Athletic Club (IAC) was
made up of players from the north end
of Winnipeg. They wore blue sweaters.
While the Vikings team
was comprised of
players from Winnipeg’s
southern neighbourhood.
They wore red sweaters.
But as the players aged and left the teams, fewer
younger ones were joining. By 1908, there were only
enough players to form one Icelandic club. What to do?
