Melting Ice
Ice covers the polar regions and many mountains.
The ice in these places contains about 6 million trillion
gallons (23 million trillion L) of water. Some of the water
has been trapped as ice for thousands of years. Rising
temperatures are freeing the frozen water. The melting
ice water is flowing into the ocean. This causes the sea
level to rise even higher.
Large streams like this one add huge
amounts of previously frozen water
to the ocean, adding to the sea level.
