Meanwhile, McDowell was unaware of
Beauregard’s plan. So, he also planned to attack
on the left. If both armies attacked the other’s
left, they would simply circle each other. Neither
attack would succeed.
On July 21, the generals put their plans into
action. McDowell moved first, giving the Union a
lead. At 5:30 a.m., the Union fired the first shot.
Within a few hours, the battle was well underway.
