Union forces had returned to Washington, DC.

The Union suffered nearly 3,000 casualties

in the Battle of Bull Run. On the Confederate

side, approximately 1,900 soldiers were dead or

wounded. In just one day, the Union’s hope for a

quick war had ended. And the Confederates were

all the more expectant of victory.
