     When Beauregard heard the sounds of battle, he
                       changed course. Instead of attacking McDowell’s
                       left, he focused on defense.
                          The Union forces pushed the Confederates
                       back for two hours. But the battle turned when
                       the Confederate backup came. General Thomas
                       J. Jackson formed a defensive line against the
                       Union. Though he took a shot through the hand,
                       he didn’t back down. Another general noted that
                       Jackson stood like a stone wall. After that, he
                       became known as “Stonewall” Jackson.
                          As more backup arrived, the Confederates
                       launched a counterattack. The soldiers roared
                       as they attacked, introducing the famous Rebel
                       Yell. After much back and forth, the Confederates
                       finally broke through the Union’s right flank.
                       At the peak of the battle, Colonel J. E. B. Stuart
                       arrived. His men charged the Union troops and
