                                                     DIGESTERS
arm animals are cute. But they
are also a major source of
                                                 F poop. There are approximately
60,000 dairy farms in the United States.
Most farms have an average of 135 cows.
                                            A 1,000-pound (450 kg) dairy cow produces
an average of 80 pounds (35 kg) of manure
                                            each day.
Too much animal waste on the ground can
cause problems. Nitrogen is a nutrient in poop.
It seeps into groundwater, draining into lakes
and rivers. There, it can cause algal blooms.
The algae suffocate fish. Manure also releases
Cattle produce a lot of manure. Digesters are one way
                                            of dealing with that manure.
