Mushy manure gets poured into pits in the ground. As

the biogas rises, it gets trapped underneath a floating

cover. Then the gas is collected. Covered lagoon

digesters are only used in warmer climates. They are the

smelliest digesters of all.

A FOUL SIDE EFFECT

There are more than 253 working anaerobic

digesters on US farms. In 2017, these digesters

reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 4.35 million

short tons (3.95 million metric tons). They also
