Those who identify as part of the LGBTQ community are likely to
experience cyberbullying. Support systems and allies are important for
victims of bullying.
Clementi was a gay man who had just begun to come out to his
close family and friends. He was a talented violinist, one of only
two freshman students chosen to play in Rutgers University’s
graduate school orchestra.
One night, Clementi asked his roommate, Dharun Ravi, to
give him privacy for a date. Ravi secretly turned on his webcam
and streamed the video. The video recorded Clementi and his
male date being intimate. Ravi then wrote about the incident
on Twitter and attempted to stream a video again a few days
later. Clementi was the topic of humiliating commentary.
