Americans learned that a new virus was spreading

around the world. The virus, commonly called coronavirus,
caused the disease COVID-19. Most people who got

sick with COVID-19 had mild symptoms, such as aches,
coughs, and fevers. But some people had trouble

breathing and needed hospital care. Many patients died.

Some COVID-19 patients need
ventilators to help them breathe.
