GEt Involved

Civil rights reflect the histories, values, and laws
of particular societies. Activism often takes the
form of raising awareness of groups whose

                                     rights are under threat.

               1 Be Local

One direct way to become involved is to be aware of possible
civil rights issues in your area. If you do become aware of a
particular cause, find out if anyone is working to bring it
to local attention and offer to help. You could write your
political representatives and the press to explain the
problem, or you could gather signatures on a petition.

                       2 Volunteer
                               Local, national, and international rights
groups always need volunteers. The ACLU in
the United States, the Canadian Civil Liberties
Association, or Liberty in the United Kingdom
are among groups that rely on volunteers to
raise money, run events, hand out leaflets, or
help in the office. Use the Internet to research
groups near you and decide which causes you
                                feel most strongly about.
