iley Carpenter walked along the running
track that surrounded the football field. She
picked her way through a crowd of students
and fans who were here for the same reason she
was: it was game night. The Renegades were
about to play the Central Rams in their first
game of the fall football season.
It was a good night for a game. The
sun was an orange ball hanging low on the
horizon, and there was a slight chill in the air.
As Riley headed toward the bleachers,
the players on the field were going through
pregame drills. The captains barked out
