looking up for the Renegades.
“You excited for
our
game on Monday?”
asked Aisha as the pep band streamed onto the
field for their halftime performance.
“Of course,” Riley said. “I just wish I knew
if I’ll be playing varsity or JV.” Last season
Riley had played on the JV soccer team, while
Aisha was one of the stars on varsity.
“You’ll make varsity,” said Aisha. “You’ve
improved so much from last year.”
“Then why hasn’t Coach given me a spot
yet?” Riley asked. “What’s she waiting for?”
Coach Bryant had named twenty girls to the
varsity roster earlier in the week, but said she
needed to evaluate the last few players a bit more
before she could fill out the entire team. There
were just two spots left and only one practice
for Riley to show that she deserved one of them.
Tomorrow’s practice was make-it-or-break-it
time before their first game on Monday.
“Don’t sweat it,” said Aisha. “You’re going
to make the team. With you kicking corners
and me heading them in, we’ll be a deadly
combination.”
