scarf covering Aisha’s head. “I love your hijab.
Is it new?”
“Oh, thanks.” Aisha touched the smooth
red and black scarf. “Yeah, it’s new. I thought
I’d get into the school spirit. You know,
Renegades Red.”
One of the refs blew a whistle, and both
girls turned to the field as the game began.
Chava Gutierrez, the Renegades’ quarterback,
kicked off to the visiting Central Rams. “Since
when is Chava the kicker?” asked Riley. “He
didn’t kick last season.”
“Beats me,” Aisha replied with a shrug.
Chava’s kick was pathetically short, giving
the Rams excellent field position near the fifty
yard line.
The Rams made one good play after
another. On the final play of the drive, the
quarterback rolled to his right and threw a
beautiful pass to one of his tight ends. The
receiver jumped up high and snatched the ball
out of the air. Once on the ground, he wrestled
two more defenders and bullied his way into
the end zone. Riley and Aisha groaned.
