“There’s your car!” Toni said. Beyond the bison, on the
far side of the meadow, was a line of spruce trees. A small
image of a white SUV with the green ranger stripe could
be seen through the trees as it drove past.
“The road goes right alongside the meadow,” Isabel
said, “just beyond those spruce trees.”
“Do you think your car is what upset them?” Buck asked.
“No, they’re used to vehicles,” Isabel said as she watched
the screen. The bison continued grazing and as the SUV
drove out of sight, the camera zoomed in on the largest
bull. It was standing in the middle of the others.
“This is where the big guy starts to get mad,” Shoop
said, looking over the others’ shoulders. “See how he stops
grazing and looks up for a second, then puts his head
down?”
“Look how he has his tail raised,” Isabel said. “That’s a
sign of aggravation. He’s really upset.”
They watched as the bull bison pawed at the ground
and shook its massive head. A steamy shot of breath
snorted out from its nostrils. Then the camera panned
out, showing the whole herd. All the bison had become
